Dressmaking for Adults
This practical course of ten dressmaking sessions per term focuses on following a commercially produced pattern (of your own choice); deciphering the jargon and following the written instructions from taking your own measurements, adjusting the pattern accordingly and cutting out the paper templates in the required size to laying out fabric, cutting, preparing, stitching and finishing the garment to a professional standard.
Within a small group and relaxed friendly atmosphere you'll learn all of the essentials, whilst working at your own pace. You will be shown new techniques relevant to your own skill level, including making darts, inserting zips, gathering, pleats, making buttonholes and finishing seams with an over-locker. The aim of the course is to provide you with the confidence and know-how to enable you to independently carry out your own sewing projects at home.
For this course you will need to provide your own commercial pattern ('Easy Level' is recommended for beginners) and the appropriate fabric, with plenty of guidance on fabric and pattern purchasing when booking. For those who have already attended a previous dressmaking course it is suggested that you choose a pattern with a new skill challenge.
The first session can include a short refresher lesson on a sewing machine if required. If you feel you need a more basic class than this to begin with, this can be privately arranged. There may be some prep work to do between sessions so you will need a basic sewing kit. Although having your own sewing machine is not essential it may be that this course will inspire you to purchase your own machine if you don't already own one and really give you the sewing bug! If you do have your own sewing machine please feel free to bring it (and begin to really enjoy using) it. All equipment is provided for your use, however please bring all trims (notions) requested on the pattern.
Tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival.
