How To Copy Your Favourite Garment
A Pattern-cutting and making 2-day workshop
for adults & older teens
Ever wished you could duplicate a favourite item from your wardrobe but don't know where to start? This 2-day pattern cutting and making course is suited to adults and older teens with intermediate dressmaking and sewing skills and covers the techniques you'll need to make a paper pattern copy of an original garment. In addition you'll learn how to make simple alterations and adaptations to your pattern, customising the fit where needed ready for making-up into your own choice of fabric the following day.
Within a small group, your first day will start with coffee/tea and biscuits while you watch a demonstration before you begin to work independently on your individual project. Under watchful guidance, you'll draft a pattern, include the relevant details, make any amendments and add seam allowances and markers, ready to make into your 'copy' garment in your chosen fabric. On Day-2 you'll be using your self-drafted pattern to construct your garment, leave new skills and an exciting new addition to your wardrobe.
It is recommended that the garment you choose to copy doesn't have higher sewing skills than you have already covered and should be something you can realistically estimate that you'd would be able to re-construct in a day. Also, you'd be wise to avoid challenging fabrics in order to be able to achieve the best outcome. Lastly, it will be appreciated that you consider the limited space we have available and choose your garment's size accordingly.
All equipment and pattern paper are provided for your use, however please bring a notebook and camera/phone to jot down notes, make diagrams, capture step-by-step images and write garment-making instructions for your own future reference.
You should provide your own fabric for making your garment, which should be of the same weight and fabric type as the original. Alternatively, you can make a toile in cotton calico which can be provided for you.
Please bring a packed lunch, weather permitting we'll picnic in the garden.
